Hello I have been trolling different forums for a while and I can not find a fix to get my HP nc6400 to boot snow leopard with both cores enabled.

The CPU is the T7200 @ 2ghz

I think the problem maybe to do with the thermal zone since I can boot with both cores enabled and get into SL for about a min with our a kernel panic. After that I will need to wait a while for the laptop too cool down before I am able to boot with 2 CPUS. For this reason I think it is thermal related I am hoping that you guys will be able to point me in the right direction. So far the only change I have made to my DSDT is the fix by laqk http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=886 which works awesome to fix the USB. Currently I am not using a custom SMBIOS.plist

I normally get 2 types of Panics

1. Failed to Start CPU01
2. CPU01 failing to respond to interrupts.

Here is my DSDT Click to view attachment

If you need information please let me know.

Thanks Psamtek

Did you try other bootloader? For example

I am using the AsereBLN which is based on Chameleon RC4 I believe. In the leopard days I was using EFI 10.5 and Chameleon RC2 and I still had the same issue. I will test your bootloader today when I get home, is there any others that you would suggest I try if this one does not work?

Hi, I saw you posted about an NC6400 and Snow Leopard. I'm stumped right now with my NC6400 and getting Snow Leopard installed and I'd be happy to get as far as you are (booting with just one core). Would you mind sharing what distro, options, configurations/customizations, gotchas, etc. you used to get your system installed up to this point? Thanks...

I sure do! I won't repost, so here's my other post:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=227614

As you can see, I'm well aware of your post and I have a feeling I'm really close; I may be selecting the wrong options on the installer? Could you post exactly which options you picked or provide any other guidance? Maybe a summary of the bios options you have selected too? Once I get it installed and running, I may need a hand getting my hands on the suggested kexts from your post and installing them...
Thanks...

I never bothered to turn off the second course in the BIOS. But anyway from what it looks like is that you are using their RTC fix as part of the install. Don't bother our DSDT is already fixed for the RTC so if you have that installed your machine will never boot. Also do you have the T7200 NC6400 or the T2500? The T7200 supports x64 and the T2500 does not so you would have to boot in the x86 mode. When you get to the bootloader screen type "-v" without the quotes and post where your machine hang while booting. I spent loads of time trying to get this to work so I probably had the issue you were having.

Edit -- You do not need any of the Kexts that I have used to fix the video etc to get the laptop to boot.

- What do you mean by "second course in the BIOS"? the dual core option in the BIOS?
- Thanks for the tip...I'll try again without the RTC; if it still doesn't work after a reinstall, I'll try the -v option and let you know where it hangs
- I have the 2500, I believe; I actually got my hands on a few NC6400s that were donated...I think one of the other ones is a 7200 but I have to double check; either way, I'll stick with the 2500...thanks for the tip on 32 vs 64 bit difference.

A couple other questions I have in the meantime:
- is XCode installed after the OS is installed? Or do I need to install it separately?
- do you leave dual core turned on in the BIOS and just disable it with the boot loader? i.e. something like cpus=1? if so, how did you configure that?

I'll be in touch! Thanks again!

Sorry it was a typo I meant Second Core not Second course.
I do turn off the the second CPU in the bootloader since I have a dream that I can eventually make it work.
As for XCode you need to install it separately apparently some hardware has issues with it.

Also I would suggest getting a BCM4311 and reprogramming the SPROM on it, I hated being tethered to a ethernet cable.

Your suggestions got me the OS installed...thanks...
What do I need to change to permanently get it to boot with one core when I have dual enabled in the BIOS? Something in my boot loader script or something?

I'm also wondering about dual-booting with Windows & Ubuntu (which I still have on the hard drive in their own partitions but I haven't tried to revive them yet). Any suggestions/tips?

I'm off to get ethernet (wired) working now. Should I even attempt to get my Intel 3945ABG wireless running or is it a lost cause (I don't mind living with just wired networking right now...or permanently)? When you suggest getting a BCM4311, you mean get a card that is that chipset? I don't know what reprogramming the SPROM means, though...

Thanks again!

To boot with one core you will have to modify your apple.com.boot.plist file. And add CPUS=1 or you can just turn off one core in the BIOS. I have tried getting the Dual boot to work with linux but nothing else. I don't remember if this version of Chameleon can see ext4 partitions or not but if it cant you can still create a ext3 boot partition that chameleon will see. As for the wireless you can could use the 3945 but only if you dont mind a flake fest. To reprogram a 4311 SPROM use this guide http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?...x-wifi-working/
the card it self is like 10$ on ebay, just do a search for BCM4311. http://cgi.ebay.ca/BroadCom-BCM94311MCG-BC...DefaultDomain_0

I got ethernet (wired) and dual boot working today and decided to try the dual core thing and to my surprise I didn't need have cpus at 1; having dual core enabled in the bios and not changing the boot options, it still booted! So, I assume that it's running with both cores? Any way I can confirm that?

If you go into the utilities there is a process monitor, which should show two cores in use. I can get mine to boot with both cores on a cold boot but after it heats up thats when I get the problem. Did you mod your apple.com.boot file? Also when you got your ethernet working did you get the MAC address to work or is it all zeros?

mine shows 2 cores in use (2 black graphs with green/red bars indicating usage). I haven't had mine running for longer than a few minutes so I don't know if I'll have the same "overheat" problem you do...I'll keep my eye on it. I didn't mod the apple.com.boot file.
My MAC address is all zeros...should I care about that? pros/cons for having that MAC address?

It's bad. You need a real Mac-address. I had the problem with Yukon2 ethernet solving with binary patching of the driver.

that post says how to fix it for the Yukon2 kext...how do I fix it for my BCM kext? What are the consequences if I leave it unfixed?

What version of the BIOS are you using?

What version of the BIOS are you using?

at the top of the BIOS screens it says: 1.31 so I assume that's it.
If it's not there's also a ROM date of 06/09/2006 and ROM BIOS version F.03 in the System Information section inside of the BIOS screens.
THe KiNG
I don't see what has this with DSDT patching, moved to the right place...

I'm a bit lost in the thread, and was wondering if you could post an end-to-end install how-to for the NC6400.
So far, I have been very unsuccessful trying to replicate my install on a P6T motherboard-based desktop...
Thanks for your help!

Hi to all, I have this great notebook with 4GB RAM and T7200 CPU (Intel GMA950 version). The only things that doesn't work here are:

- Sleep
- CardReader
- PCMCIA Slot
- CPU problems:
* ONLY ONE CORE!!!!!!
* Really HOT CPU: never less than 72 or 73 C to 81 or 82 MAX on working state.

At least I would like to resolve these CPU problems. Could someone help me??

MY OSX:
- Iatkos S3 v2 (10.6.3) ---> 10.6.7
- Chameleon RC5 ver. 760 with -P and -C states enabled (by Chameleon 2.0 prefpane)

STEPS:
- Patch DSDT only for the HPET part (Bluetooth enabled)
- Removed AppleIntelCPUPowermanagement.kext and AppleIntelCPUPowermanagementClient.kext (not resolved)
- Add AppleACPIPlatform.kext and AppleACPIThermal.kext from here WWW (not resolved)
- Installed VoodooPower 1.2.3 for Snow Leopard pkg (not resovled)
- Installed VoodooPowerMini.kext (after removed old VoodooPower) (no effect)
- Installed VoodooMonitor.kext WWW (no effect)
- I have tried some new FakeSMC.kext (ver. 405)(removing Disabler as described) but always KP

Hey nc6400's guys, how is your CPU temp? There are some news about Dualcore problems?

Please help me... I don't want to cook my notebook!!!!!

Hi, some news today.

I have tested these solution on HP NC4400 with T5500 and 2GB DDR. Notebook near to NC6400 as hardware and as "problems" (one cpu core, really hot processor over 70 C)

STEP ONE:
- Installed last fakesmc 3.1 EV. 493 from HERE (ONLY: IntelThermal.kext, FakeSMC.kext, SuperIOFamily.kext, ACPIMonitor.kext, IntelCPUMonitor.kext) in /S/L/E
- I haven't removed Disabler.kext from /E/E and AppleACPIThermal.kext from /S/L/E but this last one it's not listed on System Profiler (bohhh!!!)
- Rebuild kext (kext utility)
- Rebooted and noticed 10/15 C minus but IstatPro 4.92 indicated for example 51 C instead 'Temperature monitor 4.94" in the same time 57 C (Which is the right one???)
- Still KP when boot in dual core mode

STEP TWO:
- From this old post HERE I have modified my DSDT as described by xristos. Compiled and installed.
- Reboot and ........ DUAL CORE ENABLED!!!!! WITH NO KP TILL NOW (4 hours)

In this moment I haven't my NC6400 by me....... could someone try to apply this fix?

Please let me know as soon as possible

my 2 cents tongue.gif

Patrick

UPDATE 18-May-2011:
- Applied the same procedure for my NC6400 with success!!!! NOW A NC6400 with T7200 and DUAL CORE ENABLE WITHOUT KERNEL PANIC*.
- I vae noticed two things: (1) when I unplug AC adapter the CPUs temperature become higher like before and (2) I can't restart OSX86 and if I disable on BIOS "FAN always on while in AC adapter" I received a KP, but this last one maybe because I have extraxt the DSDT table when the option was enabled.

* Only sometimes on coldstart and always on reboot. But when it starts and in working condition, no KP
Some ideas about?

Thanks
