Full Version: Dell Laptop For Snow Leopard

So I love my dell 10v, but I'd like to have something with more power and screen size to do more in OSX.

I am still however an OSX noobie. There is a ton of info out there, so much so its a little overwhelming for a beginner like myself. I will probably eventually buy a macbook pro but I'd like to, if possible, get a dell laptop 13-15 inch in size, with a descent processor and ram for some photoshop and video work. Nothing over the top professional or speedy, but good enough for home videos and home photos.

I want to run snow leopard vanilla if possible, with a little tweaking or advanced installs necessary to get all the laptop features working. I have a dell preffered credit account that i'm going ot be using for this purchase, (so kinda has to be a dell)

The new 13 inch inspirons look nice, but the processor power seems lite, and they are so new I dont see much about them being totally tested and compatible.

XPS M1530
XPS M1330
Studio 15 1535

I'd like to keep my budget around 1000 bucks but i have some flexibility. There seems to be some good deals in the dell outlet.

if you were me, what dell laptop would you pick up for snow leopard w/ photoshop and video tasks?

Dell Inspiron 1525 15" 1440x900
Core2Duo 2,4GHz
RAM 2Gb, there is a place to add more.
HDD 250Gb
Dell WireLess 1395 == Broadcom 4315 - works fine with simple patch
Intel X3100 - with DSDT patch. Works fine even with 4x4 Evolution.
Sound Sigmatel 9228X - works with VoodooHDA
Bluetooth, WebCamera works as is.
Keyboard, TouchPad, Cardreader works with external drivers.
Sleep, Restart, Shutdown, CPU Power Managements - all resolved.

It is not a Mac to work as is but ALL problems already resolvable.

I'm new in the forum and I have a Dell 1525. installed snow leopard using cdboot 3.0 and everything worked except the sound. I tried the VodooHDA did not work. Do not know if installed incorrectly. I used the HDAPatcher and dragged the file for it. Correct?

Thank you.

Hi,
I have this same laptop. It is a long story but I had 10.6.6 working on another 1525 but it had a 1440x800 (or whatever it is) and it died, bought this second one not knowing it was a different resolution.

Is there a simple solution to this problem? Would rather not reinstall... btw when I boot as is (with -v -x) I get the black screen, I can Fn+F8 but I get some IG: brightness error and then eventually I get a desktop with nothing else.

Also, I installed with the running OSInstall.mpkg on a working Mac, then upgraded to 10.6.6, installed Chameleon vs RC5 and the /Extra with DSDT.aml and everything was fine before this new 1525

Thanks
Bob

I am a noob, trying to get a new Dell Inspiron 17R running with dual boot.
My machine has the following hardware
intel i5 m480 quad core cpu
4 gig memory
chipset HM57
Intel HD graphics
640G hard drive

I want a system that can dual boot windows 7 and OSX. I need to be running on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 if possible.

I partitioned my drive with MBR and installed Ultimate Windows 7. I then used NawCom's ModCD .31
boot and load retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 in a partition. With EasyBCD I got the dual boot working. Windows 7 is running all aspects flawlessly.

I am writing for help and recommendations on how to proceed. I have had no luck moving forward on upgrading
or resolving outstanding OSX issues.

My OSX system boots up fine, but I see I am not running in 64bit mode and using Darwin kernel 10.4. My LAN card is working fine, but my wifi is not recognized. I am using the VodooHDA 2.72 driver but getting no sound. Actually, I have to plug my headphone jack into keep from getting a continuous high pitch tone (quite deafening!) Graphics are stuck at 1024. keyboard seems flakey, but touchpad and logictech mouse working. I have a 30g USB hard drive attached and have formatted it as a GPS/Guid partition and then used Carbon copy clone to move my current status of OSX to it. I am able to boot off of it. I use this drive to test various iterations of upgrades and kexts patches. I don't seem to be making much progress. I have downloaded both the 10.6.4 and 10.6.6 combo upgrade . Also been trying the MultiBeast 3.4 tool and Nawcoms 10.4 and 10.6 package for upgrades.

My thinking was to focus on getting to 10.6.6 running the vanilla kernel in 64 bit mode and then work on resolving sound and other nuances. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.
